1st day of school. . .again

I love the first day of school. I love seeing the nervous excitement in the kids eyes. I love seeing them with their new clothes, shoes and backpacks. I love our 1st day of school ritual. Yes, we have a 1st day of school ritual. It starts with Mom waking up a half hour before everyone to make whatever breakfast the kids picked the night before. Usually it’s waffles with strawberries and whip cream. Then we blare September by Earth Wind and Fire.

Being Orthodox Christians, it’s also very important for us to pray with the kids before they leave for school. After our regular morning prayers and personal petitions I always pray one of my favorite prayers for my children. It would be easy to ask God to give them a “good day”, lots of friends, easy classes, etc but this prayer puts what’s important, to pray for our children, into perspective. Hope it becomes a prayer you pray for your children.

Happy 1st day of school!

Prayer of Parents for their Children

O God, our heavenly Father, Who lovest mankind, and art most merciful and compassionate, have mercy upon our children, Thy servants, (their names), for whom I humbly pray Thee, and commend them to Thy gracious protection. Be Thou, O God, their guide and guardian in all their endeavors; lead them in the path of Thy truth, and draw them near to Thee, that they may lead a godly and righteous life in Thy love and fear; doing Thy will in all matters. Give them grace that they may be temperate, industrious, diligent, devout and charitable. Defend them against the assaults of the enemy, and grant them wisdom and strength to resist all temptation and corruption of this life; and direct them in the way of salvation, for the merits of Thy Son, our Savior Jesus Christ, and the intercessions of His Holy Mother, and Thy blessed saints. Amen.
